- It's Here! No no, not the operating system silly. :)
I meant the new web-site.
Hopefully things will be a bit more readable now.
There will be a general site-shakedown until 0.17
and then there will be little changes at all except for the projectpaper
and all documentation, until the binaries start appearing for download.
The new site currently only works with Netscape Navigator 3.0,
the most popular browser in the World.
- Anyone want to translate the project paper from english to another language?
--min, /0.16 9/02/96
- I have pleasant little day-dream about getting a grant so I can
work on Grail full-time. :-)

- Web Address Change
If you're reading this you probably have already noticed that our
current internet service provider here, United States Internet,
has changed it's web-page URL scheme from
www.public.usit.net to www.public.usit.net.
Not that they bothered to even mention the change
to anyone in advance.
- A very rough version of
"On the Evolution of Machine, Mind, and Man"
is available by visiting the core group.
It's hardly more than my notes on the subject, but....
- I decided that, unless legalities interfer, it would be proper to
designate code-names to all groups and group specialisations (subgroups)
consisting of the names of the concept originators.
For example, the controllers group, mice specialisations,
would be code-named Doug Engelbart. :-)
- The Legacy Group code-name is offically Stephen Cabriney.
On this same subject, the Legacy doc is getting closer to being ready to show.
A large amount of e-text was ripped from elsewhere for the xms/ems/dpmi specs
and it is taking time to translate appropriately to the project.
If anyone else wants to go ahead and take up working on this
document, or wants to look at it, it can be privately emailed.

SUMMARY: The Core Groups et al --min, Executive Leader et al
All documentation for the core groups are still being brought up to date and standardized.
The paper "On the Evolution of Machine, Mind and Man"
is being prepared as an inclusive non-technical declaration of intent
and reason for the Grail Millennium Project.

Well, as most of you were completely unaware, there has been a running email
war going on the last few day while
Arzie
has been trying to prod me into actually setting up a proper list of groups.
After several proposal, and changes I think we've both gotten sick of looking
at the thing.
What do you think of the current setup?
I hope Arzie's mostly happy with it now, cause I really really don't want to
edit those HTML files again. :-)

-
Accidently deleted the Questions and Answers. Oops! :(
They're back now mostly...
-
Finalizing the group structure. Take a look....
--min, /0.13 8/2/96
-
For no reason at all we went to revision 0.13.
-
Since tomorrow's my birthday,... well. It'll be quiet here. :-)

-
The OCI/Spec docs for the Assembler and the i386 CORE are somewhat on-line
at the groups page.
It will probably be up to two weeks before they are completely converted
to HTML and brought up to speed with current designs.
But there they are anyway....
--min, /0.12 7/31/96
-
0.12 is here.
-
The monitor on the Packard Bell I do web surfing with died last night,
so updates will be a bit intermittant for a while.
Version 0.13 of the site will probably occur in one to two weeks.
0.13, will, btw, probably have a completely translated docs section
as well as a reworked groups page.
The main page will also have a new section detailing the complete
Grail Millennium philosophy and long-term goals.
-
The docs have changed
The documents are no longer stored as Word 2 .DOC files or RTFs that are PKZIPPED.
They are being translated into plain HTML 3.2 format and this will be their primary file format from now on.
Most have already been translated by a semi-functional program,
but the results were not pretty.
The Assembler docs will be the first to be fully brought up to current specs
and become HTML-friendly.
-
There is a new Grail site starting up at
http://www.dlc.fi/~arzie/grail/.
More information later.
-
Oh. Almost forgot. The spelling of Millenium
had been nagging at me the last few weeks so I finally looked it up. :-)
The correct spelling, according to Webster's Dictionary is
mil.len.ni.um.

Now CGI free!
Finally, the last of the major planned changes to the new sites have been completed.
All common-gateway-interface code has been removed
(excepting Web Counters', erm... counter at
www.digits.com -- Hi folks!).
Netscape JavaScript is being used throughout to handle all form generation.
In response to the question about not using Java--
It doesn't work on Window 3.x!.
So until they fix that, no Java at this site either excepting for special situations.
-
Arzie pointed out several of the downloadable files are corrupted.
Sorry. First time I used Winzip.
I changed all the longfiles names to 8.3 and used pkzip instead this time.
--min, /0.11 7/26/96
- Why the change of name?
- While talking to Arzie today this came up....
Why has the project name gained the word 'Millennium', and just what does that mean?
If you read through all the text of the first page (yes, it has changed. really.)
you'll notice that one of the characteristics of this operating system is it's
aspirations of longevity. While planning out Grail, it must always be kept in mind that
we are trying to make an OS that just might be in use a thousand years from now.
Yes, I know it's extremely unlikely, but the more we plan for it,
the more likely it is to happen.
As for why I'm shying away from the singular term Grail, there are two reasons.
One has to do with copyrights, and confusion with other products.
The second is simply that I don't want to degrade the ancient Grail Myth with
references to an operating system, no matter how nice it turns out. :)
What will the name of the OS finally be? I can't say.
I will always internally refer to it as Grail,
but to the public it may come to be known as something else entirely.
- Why is there so much bloody JavaScript at the site nowadays?
-
Because I'm a programmer and just can't help myself? :)
Well, that is partially the truth.
Mostly I'm just experimenting, seeing if any of it is useful to make the site stronger
and more alive! If it's causing an agonizing amount of problems for you
(and for some reason you can not use Netscape 2.02 or better or
Internet Explorer 3.0 or higher) then email me.
- What do all those numbers mean after everyones' names?
- Is this the What's New or the FAQ? :)
OK. It was at one time explicitly mentioned, somewhere,
but all changes or additions to the web-site must be proceeded by the name of
the author, the revision number of the site which was current at the time,
and the date in international format.
--min, /0.10 7/25/96
- She's up!
Alright. It's still rough, some links don't work, and most of the RTF documentation is stale.
That's not my problem. :) I'm busy with the core/core-up now.
If there's a problem with this site or you want to update links,
change text,
become a mirror,
join a group,
become a group leader,
host a sub/group's WWW status page,
report a bug,
complain about copyrights,
have me change graphics or rewrite HTML,
et al,
then simply mail me, the founder.
-
No, we have not changed sites.
Dustin's site is still available and active.
There are essentially now two mirror-image sites, Dustin's and the Founders.
Dustin's site handles the mailing-list, and the (perl) forms CGI as well as
hosting his Grail FAQ.
The Founder's (Lewis Sellers) site is the primary document and binary repository.
-
In a day or four, when the WWW has had a proper shake-down and all links and text fixed,
she'll jump to 0.11.
-
Your kindly founder is rewritting the core_i386.rtf as fast as possible
so the core_up (boot up) program can be finalized.

- We're almost back on-line. Feel free to roam around and kick the tires, so to speak. Check out all the URLs, your personal data etc.
Except for the groups.html and the downloads.html the structure of all pages should be functionally ready now.
If you notice errors anywhere else, or want to add your own text to a page,
please email me.
-
Btw, this page is for global news concerning grail.
News within each group may be found on the group page.
-
Min's fan dies. Min almost dies of heat-stroke trying to finish 0.10 of this site while the evening news drones away on the TV. :) Snazzy new graphics abound at the site.
